NBC INAUGURATES COMMITTEE TO DRIVE THE ABUJA DIGITAL SWITCH OVER

Ahead of the Abuja DSO coming up at the end of November 2016, the Director General NBC, Mall. Is’haq Modibbo Kawu has inaugurated an 18 man committee.
The inauguration which was held on the 14th October, 2016, took place at the Commission’s Conference room.
The DG informed members of the committee that part of their mandate was to drive and ensure a smooth implementation of the DSO process in the Federal Capital Territory. He also briefed the Committee about the DSO processes that were already implemented and running in the Pilot City, Jos, Plateau State.
Mall. Is’haq Modibbo told the committee that the total number of subsidized boxes was 650,000 and about 240,000 so far has been distributed in Jos. He also pointed out that the Commission was in talks with Zenith bank, who are the financier of the DSO Project, to also finance the collection of the boxes at the port.
He noted that the Commission has decided to open up opportunities for young people to get engaged as a national digital economy evolves. He revealed that there will be training and capacity building programmes for young people across the country. This he noted, would provide the local skills that will ensure that the 70% local content programmes expected to be met by broadcast stations was provided easily.
The NBC Boss also informed the committee that the content selection processes were been worked on. Adding that Pay TV’s will no longer be self-carriers as from June 2017 but will have to key into the DSO project to become signal carriers.
The inauguration had in attendance staff of the Commission as well as stakeholders in the industry.
