ANAMBRA ELECTIONS: BROADCASTERS CHARGED ON SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY posted by Awwalu Salihu on 29/01/2010
As the momentum gathered toward the gubernatorial elections in Anambra State, the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission, Engr Yomi Bolarinwa on Friday, January 15, 2010, went to Awka to visit with broadcasters in the state. 

He told a press conference that  was in Awka to remind broadcasters and broadcasting stations of their social responsibility in the role they must play in this historic election. He stressed the needfor broadcasters to play their part properly according to the law.

Delving into the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, Engr Bolarinwa stressed the need for stations to give each contestant fair and equitable airtime, such that every shade of opinion, no matter how small is given reasonable expression.
The DG NBC also reiterated the need for broadcasting Stations to obey electoral act and the Code, which require that a station shall broadcast election results or declaration of the winner of an election only as announced by the authorised electoral officer for the election.
After the Press conference, the Director General also paid a courtesy call on Governor Peter Obi, where he stressed the need to give broadcasting stations a free hand to operate according to the dictates of their profession.
Governor Obi assured the Commission that he had never interfered with the operations of Anambra Broadcasting Service, pointing out that activities of opposition parties were adequately covered by the station.
Engr Bolarinwa also visited Minaj Broadcast International in Obosi, and the Anambra Broadcasting Service where he counselled the Chief Executives to remain completely professional and be mindful of their social responsibility in their coverage of the February Governorship elections in the state.
He was accompanied on the visit by the the Director, Broadcast Content and Zonal Coordination, Mr. Tom Aliu chatta, the Head of Public Affairs of the Commission, Mallam Awwalu Salihu, the Zonal Director, Enugu, Engr Mrs. Victoria Eke, and staff of the Zone and the State Office, Onitsha.
